things they don't tell you...
I'll say what you're thinking on all things family, friends, food, fitness & fashion.
It is that time of year again. I've said before that I am a summer girl. I live for the beach, salty air and warm nights. Winter is just an all around downer! Nothing is impacted as greatly as my skin. In the summer my skin is clearer, brighter and softer. When the temperature drops below 50, my skin rebels. The result: dry, dry, dry.
Generally, after a nice, hot shower in which I use a scrub or natural cleansers, I apply a layer of lotion or use a toning lotion. Next, I would apply a moisturizing cream mixed with a tinted moisturizer for minimal coverage. But what I was finding is that very shortly into the day, my skin was flaking through all of the moisture layers. Although the process felt moisturizing as I applied the layers, my skin was drinking it up too fast, leaving it dry and flakey.
I have made a number of changes to my skincare routine. I want to share the simple changes you can try as well as provide you a list of products that I enjoy in the winter months.
First and Foremost: On Fridays I use Dr. Gross' Alpha Beta Glow Pads. These are my secret weapon against the winter blues and I can't believe I am actually sharing it with you. Sephora in the surrounding areas better stock up because once you try these pads, you won't turn back.
Why do I use them on Friday? After a week of work my face needs a breather and a little boost. After thoroughly washing my face, I gently rub a glow pad across my face, ensuring complete coverage. The pad provides both moisture and a tint of color. Beware that this IS a tanning product so you will need to wash your hands after using. I do not make a habit of using self tanners because they stain clothes and generally are streaky and orange. But these pads are an exception in providing just a little hint of sun for your face.
One Fine Day. Mmmmm I LOVE this product. I can't say enough about it.
I have tried a number of scrubs and even make my own (coconut oil, unrefined sugar, and essential oils- I like lilac) but Farmhouse Fresh really hits the nail on the head with this one. It isn't too harsh but always leaves my skin feeling fresh. It seems to lift just the right amount of dead skin without irritation. FHF did NOT pay me to write these nice things :) but I am going to brag a little about themand tell you that they are a WOMAN OWNED company out of the US, specifically Texas! Hell to the yah! You go girls!!!
My favorite part of this product is that you can eat it. Ok, I am not suggesting that you take a spoon to the jar but while your scrubbing you face and it drips a little into your mouth, you can't help but enjoy it. I have tried other scrubs by FHF but they tend to be a little salty.
I love this company so much that I have actually written to them to offer my services. I'll holler it again... hey FHF if you need a North East rep, I am your girl!
Locally, you can find the FHF line at Ezra's Mercantile. Call Lou, she'll ship!
By now you all know I am a Mario Badescu fan. But not all of his products are created equal. Many toners are also astringents and contain alcohol which naturally dries out the skin. Sure, it has a purpose. But my skin can't handle it. So i use Mario's Aloe Vera Toner which is refreshing and moisturizing.
I always finish my morning moisture regiment with a tinted moisturizer. I hate wearing foundation so I apply a layer of this and usually walk out the door for work.
Right now I am using Josie Maran's Argan Daily Moisturizer. I had used her oils before which are really good for super dry skin so I gave the moisturizer a try and I like it a lot.
Not all tinted moisturizers are created equal. You could go the BB cream route also. Other brands that I like are Stila and Clinique.
Lastly, let's talk blemish cream.
I received a sample of evologie in a birchbox last year and I fell in love. It is so smooth, can be applied to a larger area rather than many of the other salicylic based treatments which should only be used on spots.
evologie truly works better than prescriptions I have used before!
So there you go! That is my current winter skin care arsenal! This group of products isn't for everyone and doesn't even work for me during other seasons. It is specific to the dry air of winter weather. If you have any questions or want to make a suggestion, please feel free to tweet me or email me! I'd love to hear from you!
